Some folks are hip to them and price them up but I pound away at the Silverface thing and grab when I can. Most know, but it is worth seating out the black lined late 67 early 68 SILVERFACE heads as they are AB165 circuits and can be had for about 500. Add a tube reverb to a Bandmaster and your there.

Both are way, way underpriced compared to a comparable Combo like the Super Reverb, Pro Reverb, Vibrosonic and Vibrolux. The Bassman is unique and sounds it, the Bandmaster is typical blackface and sounds it. If I find a clean head Bassman or Bandmaster for under 700 I usually jump on it. I just scored another 65 Bandmaster with cab in excellent shape for retarded low price. Those prices I've seen quoted are optimistic IMO, they have been pushing the 1K mark for heads and almost double with matching cab. My favorite way of pushing them is with a MXR Micro Amp or an EH Soulfood boost pedals. The Bassmans have a much grindier, aggressive overdrive that doesn't sound like the typical BF guitar amp, ( a very good thing). I own 4 Blackface Bandmaster heads as well as the reverb guitar combos in Blackface and the Bandmasters have what I would call a typical BF overdrive,(a good thing). None of my Bassmans have a typical Blackface overdrive. AChieving tha tis the trick, I would think. ( ^) Now, if we just knew all of the secrets that Ken Fischer knew, right? He did believe that the distortion should occur at the same time in all of the stages. GP published some articles.Marc 1993 for one, IIRC> I would imagine that the internet has some places discussing such things.Īlso fwiw=.if you take a look at the Trainwreck Express schematic, you will find a remarkable similarity to the AB165's Normal channel and general topography from there on through the output.

Much has been written concerning mods to these circuits.

You might also see that there is an unused triode in V2 that many folks use for added gain. It would require a more extensive rewire.the tone stack needs to follow the second gain stage for that 5F^A/Marshall thing instead of sitting in between the first two gain stages as in the later post tweed Fenders.

REversible? The simplest would be to build the same preamp topography as in the Normal channel but with different voicing.different tone caps. IMe, the AB165 is a 'hot' guitar amp that is already capable of yielding some agressive guitar tones, and daisy chaining the channels yields that extra meat.especially useful with single coils, right? I like the results of daisy chaining the AB165's channels.much like the old Marshalls that Hendrix played, the 'bass' channel proves useful, imho.īut.yes, one could build a different preamp in the 'Bass' channel that would yield more -I'll say it-Fender tweed tones, which is where the Marshall comes from, right. THE AB165 has 3 gain stages in each channel.so I might suppose that is what you have there. The first two of those have only 2 gain stages in the 'Normal' channel.3 gains in the BaAss channel.so 'jumping' yields an out of phase thing on those amps. AA165 is the second version and the AB165 is the last BF Bassman. Danny, what BF Bassman do you have there? There are 3.with one of them being rarely seen.
